Possible explanation for this?

in 1st gear, move up to 2nd gear, clutch fully released fine, pressed accelerator to pick up speed, foot off accelerator and car then jumps back slightly?

edit: and i dont mean slowing down, more as if you actually pressed the brake

are you used to automatic transmissions... because this sounds like compression braking. If you revved up 2nd real high then let off the gas the engine and transmission will effectively brake for you.

Standard transmissions operate via clutch paks, pressure plate & throw out bearing. I would check these for wear & adjustment. Inpection of drive shaft, universal joints and drive shaft/rear differential for play/wear might be needed.

That's normal. Lower gears will "brake" more. It's the same effect almost as dropping an automatic back down to 1st gear while driving around 20-30 mph - it will abruptly slow you down.

Very normal in 1st and 2nd gears. Not so much in 3rd and not at all in 4th or 5th.
