Pull handle on driver's side just below knee leve.
Walk out to front of car.
Pull hood up 5 or so cm.
A pull cord handle will emerge from the grill, next to the Volvo logo. Pull this.
Lift hood.

I think that some of you should apologise for your comments. Especially when you realise that it is not quite so easy to pop the hood as you think.
I have a 1993 850 GLT, and if I do EXACTLY what you say to pop the hood, I don't get anywhere.
For some reason, on my car I have lift the hood slightly, and then PUSH the nob in a bit before I can lift the hood and PULL the nob!!
Who said it was easy?

I agree - before I bought my 93850glt, I had it inspected, and the shop had a hard time opening the hood. The used car dealer did too. I did too. Why? I learned that when you pull the hood release lever down below the steering wheel, you have to pull it far enough so that you feel two 'pops' - which I presume to be the catches on either side of the hood. If you don't pull the release lever far enough, only ONE of the sides releases and your hood won't open.
Older cars take a bit o' elbow grease sometimes - and patience. Even when both catches for my hood release, the little black plastic handle *rarely* pops out of the front grill. I still have to manually lift the hood up a bit until that handle sticks out. Heh... then that hood REALLY is ready to open and the springs nearly spring the hood into my jaw.

I am having the same problem! I feel like I am pulling the hood release inder the dash far enough, but when i pull that plastic lever nothing happens! If anyone has any advice please reply to: [email protected]
My oil level is getting low and I have no window washer fluid... so this is definately going to cause some prolems soon!

this might help if you cant get in.... as mentioned by and earlier post..there are 2 latches that keep the hood closed...and the center one is simply the keeps the hood from flipping open when the car is in motion.
