1987 240 extension housing bushing replacement

Post by bob2154 »

I have a 1987 240 DL automatic that needs a new extension housing bushing. My questions are: does the transmission have to come off the car in order to replace the extension housing bushing, or can you just remove the extension housing while the transmission remains attached to the engine, AND GET TO THE EXTENSION HOUSING BUSHING directly. Is a bushing extractor and driver necessary. Thanks any help in this area would be appreciated, bob2154

I have not had to deal with this issue directly. However, I was told that this part is a weak point in the transmission that needs periodic replacement. The independent Volvo parts distributor that I visited last year, the day after I bought my 740, told me that this can be done with the tranny complete and in the car. He even offered to load out an extraction tool. So I think that getting an extraction tool and crawling underneath is your best bet.
