105,000 mile service
I just took my car in for a an oil change at my dealership. I was told that timing belts go on these cars if they do not receive the 105,000 mile service. Has anyone had a timing belt issue?

This is an important time in the life of your car. The dealer is correct that the timing belt (1), should be changed as well as its associated components: idler, tensioner and water pump. The dealer isn't the only one capable of providing this service. A local independent can also do it and often for a more reasonable price.
Timing belt service is necessary and it isn't cheap. Do it soon.

agreed. you need to do it. More engines are going back to timing chains, it seems, to avoid this pricey maintenance item...
a timing belt is a high-profit item for those who are skilled (read: quick and accurate) at doing them.
Maybe talk to the dealer mechanic and see if he'll do it for $400 after hours? He'll make more, and you'll pay less.
Other regular maintenance items are important, also.
Brake flushes are aesthetic (do YOU feel that your brakes go to the floor?) and I don't really hear of other damage from letting that go.
But I had a 20 year old car that never had a coolant flush, and the radiator and heater core were clogged because of it. That needs to happen some time.
And power steering flushes and transmission flushes should be done at intervals, well before you need a rack, or a transmission.
So some of the other items included in the major service intervals DO matter.

Hello Shelley,
I have an '05 S40 also, I just was in the shop yesterday, and the 5 cylinder interval is 120,000 miles for the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulley. Most other volvos are 105,000. I am sitting here looking directly at the "schedule of maintenance service operations" from Volvo.
The only things that you are missing if you don't do the 105,000 service for the 05 S40 is the serpentine belt(auxillary drive belt) and PCV inspection. I wouldn't think that missing those items would affect your timing belt life.
My dealership did ours for $600 parts and labor. Not something I wanted to mess with.
Agree with the obvious warning above that a break of the timing belt would be a costly event, but Volvo themselves give it 120,000. If you plan on keeping the car for a few years anyway, it wouldn't really cost you a dime to do it now versus a year from now. Shop around also, but make sure they are reputable with Volvos if they aren't the dealer.
For the record, and it wasn't my fault, mine was not done until 150,000 (not my choice, previous owner never did it and it was the first thing I did after buying the car)
