2000 S70 w/sc-816 radio stuck in "CODE" display

Post by tlarim »

My 2000 S70 with SC-816 radio is stuck with "CODE" displaying and will not accept (display) unlock code input from buttons. Fuses (7 &32) are good; I cleaned/checked all connections on rear of radio; tried the 2-3 hour power-on reset - no luck; nothing will get it into another displayed mode (error/off) from which to try recovery process again. I'm out of ideas. Words of wisdom appreciated. Thanks.

You really need to enter the code. The radio is doing this because the power feed was cut (battery died or unplugged).

The easiest way is to call the dealer with the VIN to get the code. With some luck, you will get the right one but if the radio has been changed, the next thing is to pull the radio and write down the serial number to give to the dealer then.

This issue is purely internal to the radio. Contacts and fuses are unrelatred. The radio turns on.

You lost power to the radio and now its anti-theft device is active. Using the buttons on the front (see your manual for specifics) you enter the numeric code to unlock it.

If the radio is not allowing you to enter the codes with the buttons on the front, toss it in the trash and get another radio from somewhere for $25.

Yea, looks like the trash can for this radio. I was heading in that direction, but just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I was overlooking. I have a known good code. Radio is just not accepting (displaying) code numbers as they are entered. I would even be satisfied if I could force it to error or off, but its just not seeing the input apparently. The backstory telltale here is that this radio had been getting a bit cranky, not wanting to give CDs back (button issue?) and had some numerical buttom issues now and again. So perhaps the "now" part of that is permenent. Thanks all.

Before you give up, check for stuck buttons.
Most radios only accept one button push at a time.
That'll lock a front panel right up.

Oh, take the front panel off and make sure your ribbon is connected to the faceplate real good. Maybe the ribbon is a little loose.

$25 for a GOOD 816 with all working lights and working period?
Good luck with that!
If the OP wants one, I have a PERFECT one (with code of course) he can have for $60 incl. shipping

Thanks. I was responding with a similar approach, but I think our submittals passed each other and mine is out in space somewhere. I pulled the radio out to take it apart, intending to clean up every contact I could find. Something is common to all buttons, so I was also thinking there may be a common connector from the faceplate to the rest of the radio. The pictures in the link for bulb replacement on the radio will help immensly - thanks. Let you know how this turns out. If it is a corrosion or loose connector issue and that solves it, that might save a lot of radios out there. If not...well there are lots of used ones out there.
