V8 Oil Leak

Post by pengc99 »

Currently on a road trip and noticed the XC90 was getting a progressively worse oil leaks and oil burning off on (not in the engine) the exhaust pipes. It's dripping somewhere. Last night it left a 1/4 quart puddle in the garage and got a "Oil Level Low - Add OIl" message in the console. Topped it off and it drove fine for now.

What could cause this? How likely is it that it's the rear main seal? Anyone done a rear main seal on a V8 model before? Would love any input on it. Thanks.

FWIW, my wife's 2006 XC90 with the V8 123,000 miles, started leaking at the rear main seal as evidenced by oil dripping out the weep hole at the bottom of the bell housing. I thought it might be (and was hoping it was) power steering fluid as I have been having to add a lot of that lately. And the oil on the garage floor seemed thinner than motor oil. But after checking several times, it appears that the oil is dripping out the weep hole. The only thing I can think of there is rear main seal. It is not transmission fluid, for sure. The only thing this leaves me with is, where is the power steering fluid I have been constantly adding to the reservoir going? There doesn't seem to be any leaks in the PS system, everything is dry.

Well, if I need a new rear main seal, I can tell you that for the time being, it ain't gonna happen. Too much of a major project and it is too easy and a lot cheaper just to add a little oil to keep it topped off. Right now I am trying Lucas RMS leak stopper but so far the results are disappointing. It may have slowed down a little but it is still dripping a drop or two on the floor every night. I took the plastic pan off the underside of the engine so I could follow the leak better. Seems to be just enough to be annoying. Now I did do the RMS on my '95 850 which cost me $30. What I can't seem to understand is why my '65 Ford 289 with a $5. RMS lasts the life of the engine but the $30 Volvo seal with all the sophisticated rubber formulations can't even make it to 150,000.

Would welcome any comments from you guys out there!

On my audi the power steering fluid was leaking out of the rack seals into the boots. And when I'd put it in the lift for an oil change it would leak out. As for why a ford rms would last longer than a Volvo..... Because Volvo? Euro? Totally different engines.
