Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
Hi all - I've been reading these forums for a few years now and it's been a tremendous help allowing me to do most of my own repairs. I'm to the point now where the major stuff has been fixed and I'm working on the minor things....like the spoiler light bulb. I thought it would be a simple task, but I'm confused on how to even access the bulb. At first, I thought I could turn the knob on the back of the unit and the bulb would be attached that way. But I can't get the knob to turn a full 90 degrees and I'm afraid to really torque it because I don't want to break anything. I even took the spoiler completely off thinking I could access the bulb from the top of the center unit. Does anyone know how to access it?
The 1993 spoiler is a "weird duck" and I cant give you any hands on guidance since all of mine are newer and they have a bank of lights. The lens comes off on the newer ones to get to the lamps. I think you are on the right track with the knob on the back but it likely won't turn over 1/4 to 1/2 turn and I would suspect that the assembly will then slide out the rear (lens side) of the assembly to get to the lamp.
From what I've read the 1993 is the red-headed step child of the 850s so I'm not surprised this is different as well.
I tried getting anything to come loose again to no avail. I'll devote some more time to it this weekend and if I get it out I'll post some more pics of how things work.
I've taken mine out and had to repair the contacts to the bulb from previous owner damage. I'll be taking pictures tomorrow of some things, so I'll post back here then,
If I remember correctly, it wasn't even 90 degrees that it turns until you can gently pry it out with a small blade or screwdriver. There is a rubber O-ring that is holding it snug, so it is decieving as to when the bulb holder is loose.
I'm surprised you took the whole spoiler off.

I am having a lot of issues with those contacts you are talking about. I cant get mine to work since the contacts fell off, but I cant get my fingers or tools in there to fix it... any thoughts?
I did it around this time last year, but I recall grabbing the contacts with my little finger and gently bending them into place.
I'm almost afraid to open it again until the bulb goes.
Tomorrow I'm doing the timing belt and will be taking photos. I'll try to remember the tail light for you and post it when I can. I took it apart a couple times so it should be alright one more time.
