just bought 1993 850 with bad fuel filter

Post by kewpielikesvolvos »

Bought an 850 last week with 220k miles on it and a "clean bill of health" from its mechanic -- other than the fact that the fuel filter evidently needs to be changed since the engine died several times starting it up to drive home. How do I change the fuel filter? Does it matter what brand of fuel filter I get (provided that I find one that fits the year/make/model)? What kind of tools do I need?

Oh...and a couple more questions --

Does it matter what brand of fuel filter I use, provided that i use one meant for the year/make/model? Should I avoid big-brand auto parts store home brand supplies?

AND

Where would I find an actual Mechanic's book to my year/model? (1993 / 850)

The filter should be a Bosch.

As far as manuals go the Haynes manual is OK, I have found the Chilton's to be worthless.

The '95 factory manual that is hosted in the downloads area under the repair database is also an excellent resource and it is 90+ % accurate for your '93.

Filter is pretty easy. My suggestion is just to loosen the 12mm bolt instead of taking it all the way out because I had a heck of time trying to get it back in and have actually just been driving it without the bolt.

Welcome to the world of the '93 850. Be prepared to ask about parts for this particular year. Many sites and ebay sellers advertise a part that fits '93 through '97. Many parts do, but in the last year of owning mine I've come across many of the year specific issues, and parts for the '93. It was the first year in the United States and they changed many parts in '94 that are interchangable though '97, but no good for a '93. Don't be afraid to ask.
Good luck, and enjoy.

Hi Lee,
You advise that the filter should be a Bosch, but what part No., do you know?

OP - did the fuel filter solve that problem??
other than the fact that the fuel filter evidently needs to be changed since the engine died several times starting it up to drive home.
That is not a good diagnostic for a bad fuel filter.
