Rubbing/grinding noise when turning

Post by Donniegood »

I have a 2000 Volvo v70 no turbo with everything stock I recently purchased. It has been well maintained with records but after 2 100 mile trips I have developed a grinding somewhere in the front end when turning. I have not had a chance to check get under it (just got home from honeymoon) but I do know he had some caliper work done within the last year. Anything specific I should look for? Not sure if suspension is original off the line haven't had time to dig into the records he left with me

Turning at full lock as in parking lots? The wheels rub the fender liners on many Volvos. Old shocks, bad alignments, wrongly-sized tires, or broken steering stops on control arms could be to blame.

Or just turning to go around corners, etc?
In that case, it could be something like a bad outer CV joint or bad wheel bearing.

Not full turn just like into driveway probably half turn. I am hoping to get under it this week to see if there's anything I can see. Any easy way to tell cv or bearing I am by no means a mechanic but I know my way around a car for the most part

A bad CV joint can usually be traced back to popping noises when turning and an leaking or split boot on the axle. This will be readily visible just taking a look at it - just park the car with the wheels turned fully right or left and have a look at the boots on the axles.
