Car, 1996 850 GLT, runs great, 163,000 miles, looks good on the outside, willing to sacrifice inside for cool air.

A/C evaporator on my 850 went out again. (2nd time) The repair is in the $1700 to $2000 range.(Labor)

It's statements likes these (on forum boards) make me realize I need to take some drastic action to fix a 100 dollar part.

Hi Bill,

I have a 95 850 waggon and the a/c evaporator has been replaced four times in ten years.

The vehicle has only 140,000km and five evaporators.

Other than the evaporator problems the 850 is a very nice car. I also have a 05 v70 and I still prefer the 850

Regards,

Richard

So,

The question is?, from help on this board, besides having an ugly dash that may not be fastened back right or loose and a missing air bag, I'm the only one that drives it, and not cutting any wires does anyone see the harm in cutting >

a big hole in the dash; passenger side, gutting it and exposing the evaporator for future fixes.

I know this is radical but the car is worth less than the repairs and I need it as an airport vehicle.

Thanks.

Most people make a big mistake when using the A/C and it hastens the demise of the evaporator. It is very important that you run the blower fans without the A/C on for at least 3 minutes before shutting the car off. This allows the evaporator to dry out and helps prevent deteriation of its seals. Volvo realized this and has incorporated a nifty little relay into the newer cars that automatically runs the blower fan after the car is turned off, thus allowing the evaporator to dry out and dramatically extend its usable life.
