98 volvo s70 cranks but won't stay running

I inherited my mom's 98 volvo s70 recently. It was running fine, then my daughter borrowed it and now it's dead. She said she drove it from Savannah, GA to Jacksonville, FL and back and it was fine all the way there and almost all the way back, then it seemed to be running rough. I went to start it in the morning and the car would crank but not start.

My husband (who's about as far from a "car guy" as it is possible to be) and his father put it on a code reader and the MAF code came up.

They cleaned the MAF censor, even though bypassing it didn't seem to make a difference.

We were told to try bypassing the Fuel Pump Relay with a paperclip, tried that, the car ran. Took 2 weeks to get a new one (the part kept coming into the auto parts store and they'd open the box and it would be the wrong part in the box), he replaced the relay and the car would start IF we gave it gas (which was never necessary to get the car to start before this).

I'm rather emotionally attached to this car - and rather broke! Any suggestions on what I could check out on it next?

a little more information: a friend suggested maybe it was the fuel filter - she says she got gas in Fl, where they use a higher ethenol (spelling?) content than here in GA - and maybe it kicked up some crud. I do know she has a tendency to run cars low on gas, even though I've asked her never to run any of my cars under 1/4 tank.

What happens now is the car will start, but when I put it in gear it dies on me.
