OverDrive Unit Problems

Hi

Hope somone can help, i have a Volvo 940 2.3 Turbo, with the 4 speed box and overdrive unit, my problem is as follows

When the car is cold the overdrive unit works with no problems, however as soon as vehicle warms up, the overdrive unit will no longer engage, even though the light comes on, furthermore, if the car is in overdrive will drop out, volvo's say unit is old and worn (180,000 miles!) and say the cost of replacment (refurbished unit) is about
