I have a friend who has an 87 740 SLE RWD. They were just diagnosed with a bad water pump. My question is am I going to be dealing with a Timing Belt issue (ie taking it off to get to the WP) or is the Pump independent of the TB and Cam? Its a 4 cylinder, but I'm not certain of the engine size.
Thanks for any help!

The water pump on the Volvo four cylinder (230F) is external to the timing case. This engine resembles most engines from RWD cars of the 50's through 70's. It is mounted on the front of the engine and driven by a conventional V-belt off of the crankshaft pulley. Water pump replacement in my 1986 740 GLE was simpler and easier than doing the same in my 1964 Chrysler. Good luck with the repair.
