I've had this car for the past 3 months and bought it thinking it would be a very dependable and reliable car. Last Friday I got in and turned the key and have full battery power but it won't crank- it seems like there is an immobilizer on or something? I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem at all? when I turn the key it just makes a sound like the fuel pump- then it goes off. But it isn't the battery as I have power to everything.
If anyone can or tell me what they think before I have it towed and it turns out to be something silly that I could do myself.
Thank you to anyone who has any input into this.

2001 S40 won't start
Alright- I had the car towed and found out it is the ignition lock cylinder.
What causes these to go out? An expensive problem for owning the car for 3 months. I"m thinking I should sell it after this ordeal and by something a bit more reliable. I'm scared what the future holds after reading this forum and all the problems volvo has. I bought the car under the assumption it is one of the safest vehicles on the road and most dependable. Now I'm thinking otherwise....
Thanks for anyone who replied to my post here.

Safe and dependable are seperate. Having said that, my mom's 2000 or 2001 V40 has been very reliable. A bit more in maintenance for brakes, but otherwise not expensive.
Much of the car is acutally by Mitsubishi. See here for more: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/volvo_s40_v40.php

I had to have the ignition lock cylinder replaced in my 2001 s40- it costed me 460$ and also I didn't have my car for 2 weeks. Does that cost seem right for that or rather expensive? That was at the dearlerships cost-
I'm just curious.... any posts are appreciated.

Sam!
My 00 V40 had the same problem, the ignition lock cylinder broke inside car would not start (starter position would not hit) dealer had to order the part I didn't want to wait so I took the key cylinder out and pulled broken pieces out of the lock cylinder and got it to work again. put it all back together and I returned the new part 120dllsUS. this repair does not require to be done by a dealer, just the part
