daytime lights

The Volvo 850 lights go out as soon as the ignition is switched off. Does this mean it is ok to leave headlight switch in on position all the time if you want daytime running lights but your version of Volvo 850 does not have that? I thought it might strain the battery if lights are going on while it is starting.

No, you can leave it in the headlamps on position at all times. The car will automatically turn off all unnecessary accesories such as lights, air vents, and stereo when starting so as to utilize max power to start the car.
