The headunit in my S60 no longer functions so I need to replace it. The dealer will only put in the same unit (hu-613) for $700 or an "upgrade" for $1400. However, I would still not have an aux input. Of course, I would rather simply install an aftermarket radio. Now it gets confusing.
Do I need to have the dealer run a special software from Volvo to tell the car's computer that a device has been removed from the network? I have read that I need to have a dealer run a "radio removal" software because my HU is actually a computer control unit (CCU) and the car's computer will become confused if I simply take out the old radio. Has anyone had this software tool run on their car?
Crutchfield says that I can remove the HU and replace it with anthing I want but I will lose the center speaker and steering wheel control. My mechanic says that only a dealer can replace this HU.
Could someone who has successfully done an install, themselves, please tell me whether or not I can put an aftermarket radio in without frying my car? My radio has been dead for over a month. I have been using my IPOD with an external speaker and it's pretty sad. I suppose I could break out my old boombox and put it on the seat.
2004 S60 radio replacement
I ended up just putting a new stereo in and not doing anything special. I didn't go to the dealer and so I didn't have any special software from Volvo installed. I had already called them and made an appointment for this service, which they insisted that I would need and would cost around $100 (it was a year ago so I don't remember the exact amount). To sum up, I just installed a regular stereo from Best Buy and did not do anything special. The car is fine. My sun roof works and everything.
