Oil leaking from back side of motor corner passenger side

Post by volvojosh »

I have a volvo 1998 S70 2.4 non-turbo. There is a substantial amount of oil leaking from the lower engine corner of the passenger side. Is there an oil return, hose, or anything back there that would allow a qt to leak per hour??

I am not seeing any loss in power or anything like that. The cylinder block head was replaced 40k miles ago along with the gaskets, etc. There is not oils coming from the top of the engine or valve cover. I took the timing belt cover off and there some residual oil their.

Please, any advice would be very much appreciated.

On a non turbo there is no oil supply or return line in that area. If it is low it could be the sump thermostat cover plate or it could be a bad seal on the sump pan. The oil thermostat cover plate does use a gasket but the replacements are cheap.

The "seal" on the sump is anaerobic sealer, there is no gasket. To re-seal it the sump pan needs to come off, the mating surfaces cleaned up, and then the sealant gets reapplied with a very short nap roller. If you go that far be sure to get a new sump O ring kit and change the O rings out while you are there.

Check the Front Cam Seals for leak.
Once the TB cover is off, use a flashlight to shine through the holes in the Cam Sprocket, sometimes oil is pooled in there and difficult to see.

I once had a leak that was hard to find. I had to clean everything up and get under the car with it running to find the leak (ramps). There are some plates on the back of the motor that has a thin gasket which was leaking. The gasket kit was something like $7 at the stealer and took me 20 minutes to change (I'm a slow worker).

I am not really knowledgeable with where the sump pump is. Can you please send me an image or explain where and what is looks like?

This doesn't sound like a head gasket since the car runs with full power?

No visible leaks coming from the cams. Removed timing belt cover.

Another option is to start fresh:
- Clean the oil leak with some "Purple Power" (a few $ at auto parts store).
- Rinse with some water (do not let water get inside the spark plug holes!).

Then monitor oil leak every day after you get home from work.

My 1998 S70 GLT with 185K miles has now developed a leak exactly like in the photo posted above by rspi.

Can someone post the PN for these 3 gaskets?
I borrowed this photo from the internet to show you the 3 gaskets I need to buy:
Thanks!

Wow that is bad luck, very rare location for a leak, prior to this I would have guessed only the abused engines picked up a leak there. Surprising. One thing to consider, many people just use the standard anaerobic sealant that you probably already have in the garage. :) http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/16 ... s-gaskets/
