1999 v70 cam seal

Post by anniqu »

I recently changed the cam seal on my 1999 v70. It appears that there is still oil leaking from the cap. What did I do wrong ??

Leaking from the cap, which cap? Oil cap? If you mean distributor cap, than I would guess the seal is not seated properly or is nicked.

Changing the cam seal won't help with leaking from the oil cap. You'll need to change the gasket on the cap, and maybe service the PCV.

I misspoke when I used the word cap. I was referring to the cover for the cam seal. There still seems to be oil running down from that cover.

Either:

1. Old oil that you did not clean up after repair.

2. Bad seal, use only Volvo or SKF seals only.

Aha, then do see my striked out text above, i.e. could also be

3. not installed properly (is it straight/flat? flush with the outer surface?)

4. the seal was nicked or bent before installation

or even

5. some people find that surrounding the seal with a thin layer of silicone is necessary to get a good seal.

You're going to want to pull that cover and look at the seal; can you tell where the leak is coming from (or, as cn90 suggested in #1, is it really leaking at all?)?

I am going to get the SKF seal . Is there supposed to one seal or two inserted ?? . I have cleaned the area after installing the new seal and the oil shown is after a couple of weeks of installing the new seal. Also I think I may have pushed the new seal too far in.

Each cam has a rear seal and a front seal. They are different sizes. And there are two cams right, so altogether four seals. But if only one is leaking (the rear on the intake cam in your pics), then I would probably only replace that one. Your call, the rears don't take a lot of effort but I don't like to replace a part that isn't bad. Can become an expensive habit.

FWIW some people will swear that it is fine to push those seals all the way in so it may be, but I am certain they come from the factory flush.

Be sure to gently clean the bare surface of the cam from any buildup, that can also cause the seal to not work properly.

On my '99 there wasn't even a seal there behind the cap on the intake cam and I tore the cap up pretty good getting it off. It appeared that there never was a seal installed. I don't know how they think you can get the old cap off without killing it.

I installed a seal and bought a new cover cap and no leaks.
