Issues with a C70 radiator removal

Post by volvooh »

I am replacing the radiator on 1999 C70 Turbo.

Problem One- I cannot get the fan shroud out. I believe it is the top intercooler hose that refuses to be moved out of the way. It appears it ends under the intake, any suggested on how I can get this out of the way? It appears that the radiator will have to come out the top, unless I remove the lower intercooler hose....

Problem Two- If I remove the lower hose, will I lose a lot of fluid?? Is this advisable?

Should I be planning to take this out through the bottom or the top? I saw an FCP tutorial that took it out the top, but I need to get the fan shroud out for that to happen.

Should be similar to these:

There is no fluid in the lower intercooler hose.

What do you mean "the top IC hose refuses to be moved out of the way?" Just remove the two clamps and pull it out.

I found it is much easier, on Electronic Throttle Body & Turbo cars, to lower the entire 'sandwich' of radiator, intercooler, and AC condenser - then separate under the car.

You dont have to disconnect the AC to do this, by the way.

I dont think you can sneak the radiator out past the intercooler snout up top - but doesnt the radiator mounting ears preclude you from doing this anyway?

You Have to remove the radiator and intercooler together from the bottom. As mentioned the radiator ears that attach to the body attach from underneath.

That's how my video explained. Drop all 3 together, then separate, then pull the innercooler with the radiator.

As any FYI, I ended-up removing the radiator and intercooler together through the bottom. Had a big issue with the lower transmission line but through some persistant pushing and pulling was able to remove it (both tabs broke off when I was trying to remove it). I assembled the intercooler and radiator back together before reinstalling it again from the bottom. I have to pick-up some new hose clamps and I plan to replace the irritating green clips before re-installing the transmission lines into the radiator.
