S40 driver side axle shaft replacement

Post by tr_car_nut »

After replacing the transmission on my car I'm having a problem reinstalling the driver side axle shaft back into the transmission on my 2003 S40. I know it takes some force to compress the circlip but for some reason I'm not able to press the shaft back into the transmission. Wondering if anyone has found a good trick to doing this task.

push inward if no go then turn axle 1/4 turn pull out a slight bit and push in again. Repeat a few times. The circlip will drop down and be offset and not want to go into the bevel on the outer part of gear it slips into. If it fails to start into the bevel then you can't get it in. The rotation, pull back, push again gives it opportunities to reposition where it will go in.

Okay that sounds logical. I had to do this same operation on my S70 and V70 and it was not that difficult. For some reason on the S40 it just does not compress that circlip. I'll try again this weekend with your method. Appreciate the advice.
