2004 XC90 T6 ATF drain and fill,

Post by DrivenMATTMAN001 »

Hi everyone i'm planning on changing my ATF as the old stuff is starting to look a bit cruddy, any tips or advise on this topic would be a great help, i understand i can drain and refill the transmission a bit at a time over a few days and eventually all fluid will be replaced, i prefer this method over a complete flush as i understand this can stir up nasty bits that otherwise may have stay put, i purchased this vehicle a little over a month ago and have only just found out about the T6 and the awful GM transmission, to be honest its been bugging me for the past couple of weeks, i payed £5000 for the car and the cost of a transmission rebuild would be close to £3000 arrgghhh!!!! luckily i was sifting through the cars paperwork and found it had a transmission rebuild at 76'000 miles and its now got 89'000 so i figure as long as i keep on top of the ATF and change it about every 15'000 or so it should really help prolong the life of the transmission. As i said any tips on this would be most appreciated

Thanks

Matt

Recommend complete flush and new filter. Not very hard job for DIY person. Lots of info on the sticky post at top of page for T6 trans service.
My 2004 T6 has 126,000 miles of trouble free transmission miles. Preformed complete flush around 90,000 miles and went with Redline D4 ATF fluid.

I'm not sure what fluids are available where you are but my favorite is Amsoil's ATF. (www.amsoil.com)

If you are most comfortable doing the drain and fill that's fine. You can drain and fill the trans each time you do an oil change(or every other time) until you are satisfied. You are already under the car and oily so why not.
