'97 960 Air Pump / Smog Pump

I am in need of an air reciprocating pump (air pump/smog pump) for my '97 960. The CEL is lit on the dashboard and my mechanic tells me that the diagnostic code indicates the need for a new pump. First, I am wondering if this diagnosis is accurate ? Secondly, if it is accurate, he tells me that the cost of a new pump is around $800 (US dollars). I have seen them for less online. However, it seems that the prices are awfully high for such a small pump. I was also wondering if it is possible to get a pump through the members on this forum or if anyone knows whether getting a used pump could solve the problem. I cannot pass state vehicle inspection with the car in this condition (CEL on). Any help or suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.
