can anyone tell me how to replace the rear oil seal on a 5254f 850 1994? I am thinking about purchasing one that has 96000 and this is the only problem. Advice? Suggestions?

Replacing the rear main seal is basically a matter of seperating the transmission from the engine so that you can unbolt the carrier plate and seat the new seal. It is VERY labor intensive and should not be attempted unless you know what you're doing and have the equipment to do so.

Hi-
The rear main seal leak is something that I've had to wrestle with on my 93 850. Unless you're a good mechanic and have the proper tools, i'd say have it done by a mechanic. That being said, the repair (according to the estimates I've gotten) is gonna be around $1200. I would deduct that from the asking price (since I suspect that this may be a reason that he/she is selling it) and see what happens- unless you REALLY want the car and it's a really good deal already. There are other things that you might want to try- replacing the flametrap, using a gasket sweller- to reduce the amount of oil coming out of the crankcase, but these are only short term solutions that only delay the inevitable- I know, cuz' that's what I'm doing!
However, my volvo has 220,000 miles on it. so i'm in no hurry to replace it
Good luck!

I will have to replace my rear main seal on my 1994 Volvo 850 soon. i am a diesel mechanic but i've never pull apart an volvo engine before. do you have any tips and tricks you can share?? Is it really easier to drop the whole engine from the bottom instead of pulling the transmission?? do i need any special tool?? anything else to replace while the transmission is out??
