2000 xc v70 awd exhaust modifications

I've noticed a throaty rumble and small holes in the 2 mufflers on my new used volvo. Also the previous owner said it needed cat converter and o2 sensor for inspection...I notice it has a knockout by the driver side, non vented muffler, should I replace as is, run pipe to two vented mufflers or run one off a straight pipe. I'll need to be legal for Ma. inspection. Any help, ideas, are greatly appreciated. Also, I'm thinking aftermarket parts as $ is a factor.

MA used to follow the CA requirements. You will need an exhaust system with a working CA approved cat and mufflers and exhaust pipes with no holes in them ( except the back where the exhaust exits post bumper.

I would weld in a magnaflow cat, muffler and pipes to keep costs reasonable. The 304 stainless they use will help ward off the salt corrosion for much longer than the mild coated or aluminized steel most part stores sell. If you can't weld then use clamps. ( Stainless clamps are available as well).

Call Erie Vo-Vo and get a quote on a replacement muffler section. They probably have a handful of them. They also stock downpipes as well. (With the cats built in)

I always recommend replacing the exhaust parts with OE, since the whole system comes apart pretty easily and you can bolt in whatever section you need without needing to weld.

I wouldn't trust the previous owner on the O2 sensor AND catalytic converter being bad. Tell us the codes and it might end up being something as simple as a vacuum leak.

Shipping distance from Erie Vo-Vo won't be too far from you, so it might not be abnormally costly.

If your XC has a tailpipe provision on the driver's side, it's running a muffler section from a 2000 V70R. The XC did not come with this stock. It should have the single exhaust, but you have the option of getting another R muffler section if you like the dual-tip look.

IIRC, All the AWD's have a filler blank on the left side.
They just didn't start actually using it until the '00 R came out.
I believe that the '00 R system is still available at the dealer and
should bolt right up.

Ah, I read his post wrong. I thought he meant the muffler had the hole for the actual tailpipe, he just meant the bumper. Either way, 00 R exhaust is a neat upgrade. Or single for stock looks and probably a bit cheaper.

I spent the first few years with my '98 casting my gaze
upon that wretched blank from across many a parking lot.

I was convinced that dual outputs would be soon be mine!

It was just a matter of the factory single tip biting the big one...
But the stocker exhaust Won't Die!

Someday...

That is correct. On the FWD versions of the V70 the exhaust exits on the left side. On the AWD versions it exits on the right side. They made the bumper cover to fit either version so the filler panel is nothing more than a trim piece.

I did this very upgrade and love it!!! I can't say it makes any difference in performance or even exhaust note but that blank on the drivers side was driving me INSANE!

Also, if I ever do my turbo upgrade (16T is in a box in my garage) I figure it will flow a bit better than stock. But honestly I did it mainly for my mental health

Here's how I did it:

Watch for a 2000 R part out in the parts classifieds and ask the seller to unbolt the mufflers from the car, remove the tips from the mufflers, wrap the tips to protect them and minimize clanking around, save all bolts and any other parts, clamps, hangers, etc. and include those. For packaging, drop by a bike shop and ask for some bike boxes, everything should fit in a bicycle box, almost. Use the other box to cover the bits that stick out, tape it all up and use Greyhound to ship. Greyhound is terribly risky because they don't give a rip about anything, no tracking, 1000 things could go wrong but I got mine shipped from California to Montana. Never would have happened via UPS or FedEx.
