1993 940 Cylinder head has some plugged holes?

Post by 98T5 »

I can see what looks like factory plugged holes on the bottom of the cylinder head. and the gasket matches up perfectly to cover those certain holes. is this normal? I mean, the holes literally look like caked up carbon, but when I chiseled at it with a flathead and a rubber mallet, it doesn't flake away like the rest of the caked up carbon I already scraped and chiseled away in other areas of the head. So again, are these holes suppose to be sealed up like that? :?

Quite normal. That head could be used for different engines and need the closed holes open and the open holes closed. Depending on its use depends which holes are drilled out.
the rest of the caked up carbon I already scraped and chiseled away in other areas of the head.
I do hope you didn't use a chisel on the head as even minor scratches can be bad. Have you checked the head to see if it is of the correct height or warped? This is essential whenever the head is removed.

The head height should be 5.752" (146.1mm) You can check warpage yourself using a metal straight edge. Check both crosswise and lengthwise. Maximum warpage allowed is 0.02" (0.05mm) crosswise and 0.04" (1.0mm) lengthwise. If it exceeds either of these measurements the head must be skimmed before refitting.

:o  I have not done this step, but in the interest of time and money, I will have to do it myself. hopefully it's not warped. As I can't afford to have it skimmed. :x

And I did use a flat scraper and green scrub pads to get the heavily stuck old gasket off. the valve gasket was a total PIA to get cleaned off good. the rest of the areas like the manifold, head gasket, etc..cleaned up quickly. not shiny silver, but clean enough from the build up and gunk. I'm not trying to win any shows with this car, it's a daily cruiser. I just want it running again with no leaks.
