2005 XC90 Wheel tighten torque discrepency?

Post by ivansxc90_2012 »

Just wanted to get some opinions on the attached PDF I came across last week when researching rear brake job. It appears to be an official Volvo doc that instructs rear wheel tighten torque on page 6 as follows...
"Install the wheel studs loosely. Then tighten the wheel studs
crosswise. Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lbf. ft.). Use torque socket
9814031 if using an impact spanner. The studs must be tightened
crosswise and to the correct torque to prevent stresses in the
brake disc".
Everything I have come across on this and other websites has been 140 NM or 105 ft lbs.
Am I not understanding correctly or is the tighten torque different for front and back wheels?
Just wondering. Thanks in advance for enlightening me and btw for this site and all the useful information everyone provides.

This may not be helpful at all, but I came across a similar situation on our GMC Envoy. The Haynes referred to specific Torque specs and alternative sites and dealer info referred to another value. I have noticed that torque specs for different years varied for the brake callipers on the Envoy. Some years had a bigger rotor and calliper and perhaps were also made of a different metal which would not stand a higher torque value.

I think the best would be to check with the Volvo service department and get the details for your specific year and model…..assuming you have not done that already.

I checked with the local Volvo service dept. and they said 90 Ft Lbs all around...go figure. I didn't get into further details with him as he sounded indifferent about it.
Thanks for your input Abe
