New proud owner of an 850r

Post by marklar »

Hey everybody, I posted on here a few months back about some 850's I was looking at and I got alot of helpful feed back from a few members. I didn't end up getting any of the ones I posted then. But a clean 850r came on the market in my area and I took everyone's advice from the last time I posted and the test drive went well and I had a mechanic check it out. Now I'm the proud owner of a red '97 850 r. It's got 110,000 miles on it and the carfax showed that it was dealer maintained until about 80,000 miles. It's in overall good condition and it made the 200 mile drive home just fine. But, about a hundred miles into the trip a check engine light came on...so fingers crossed that doesn't turn out bad...any way, just wondering if anyone knows of some good mechanics in the South Georgia/ north Florida area they would recommend. I have a reliable car also so I'm not too concered about this one. I have nothing but time to make it perfect. Any suggestions on first steps to take? I know there's alot of stage 1 threads so we don't need to make another one. But just curious what people's experiences are.

Congrats on the car!

We like pictures :)

First things first - get that code read - hopefully a vacuum leak or something stupid. If that's the case, it's a case for you to do a "stage 0" and replace all the vacuum/coolant/IC hoses that may need attention.

I'm going to pick up an obd II reader tomorrow and get it all registered. I'm also going to have to start getting tools. I know that I need new struts, axles and brakes. And a lift, I've found videos on how to do all of these repairs, then I'm going to get it to stage "0", I've got the time and extra income. Does anyone have any suggestions on a sort of starting point as far as tools go? I'll post some pics tomorrow. I don't know what "loto on the code means" rspi.

Start with a set of metric sockets and good Torx sockets/screwdrivers. Craftsmen usually has tool sets with both 1/4 and 1/2" drive sockets for $50-80 and have served me and my brother well with the Volvo.

Axles/struts you would do well to pick up a small air compressor and air gun - they'll make your life so much easier.

Just light humor about a lottery of what the code is that surfaced after you drove for about 100 miles.

That code/codes had triggered before, the seller reset it/them before selling it to you.

Me... I take my scanner with me when looking at a car now. The first thing I check is the readiness monitors..... If they aren't ready it was just reset and they're trying to hide something.

But, you have the car you wanted and whatever it is likely isn't a huge issue.

I had the mechanic do a scan on it before i bought it and the only thing that popped up was the abs, which the abs light was on also. There is also a light on saying that a light in the car is out somewhere, but there isn't. So I don't know if he reset it or not, either way it's my problem now, lol.

This repair fixed my ABS / TRACS light. It was easy.
Sorry that it's not a MVS post. Hope it's ok to put it up.

If that light is on an exterior bulb is out. I had a similar issue on my first 850. Two identical bulbs on each side of the car had burned out so there was no way to notice that any lights were out (both sides of the car looked the same.) Once the bulb(s) are replaced that light will automatically go out, you don't have to reset it.
