2007 S60 CD player stuck after clock spring replacement

Post by traveader »

The CD player was working perfectly fine and got stuck immediately after the clock spring was replaced. It does not run, nor eject. The radio is still working perfectly fine. The job was done by an independent mechanic. He has tried disconnecting the battery for two hours but no luck. Also put the old clock spring back, still no difference. I thought it was due to the programming issue, i.e., somehow the computer does not recognize the CD player, but we are told by the Volvo dealer that the CD player is not related to the clock spring and it is by pure coincidence that the CD player breaks down right after the steering wheel job. According to the dealer the whole HU-850 needs to be replaced, which of course, is going to cost $$$. Any different idea???

I think the CD player failure was unrelated. Junkyard player is best solution

I agree
One would have absolutely nothing to do with the other in any way

Well, that seems to be the common notion. However, there is more to the story. The airbag light and "SRS service urgent" message came up when the mechanic was messing with the clock spring in an attempt to figure out what went wrong. That per se was not hard to figure out and it was an easy reset at the dealer. It is known the computer for the stereo and the computer for the airbag are connected to the same network (http://www.fixya.com/cars/t10535680-2006_volvo), so what happened to the airbag may point to what might have happened to the stereo, i.e. the ECM registers an error when the ignition is turned on but some part of the wiring is not plugged in. Any comments?

My next question is: is the CD player completely hopeless once it is stuck, or do I really need to replace the whole thing?

If the SRS light reset fine, then the network is communicating ok and there is no reason to believe its anything but a bad stereo.

You could try opening it since you are all in at this point.

Thanks, but still, the essentially same cause could have different consequences on different parts, no? The airbag light can be easily reset, but for the CD player, once it is jammed, the damage can't be undone, at least it sounds like, yes? So I'll proceed to get the stereo replaced.
