98 Volvo S70 GLT Metal clips for oil lines at radiator

Post by MikeS70GLT »

I am having my radiator replaced and the mechanic suggested I get spare clips for the oil lines that connect to the radiator in case they break (one at each corner). Are these metal clips easy to find in auto stores? And if not, where can i find them online. This site has been great for helping me with these miniscule issues so I thought I'd try here before going to the dealership.

You can just use hose clips or zip ties on these, I recall from other posts

On edit...to clarify, you use both the Volvo supplied clips and secure them with a hose/jubilee clamp or a zip tie. Red zip tie of left, green on right.

If you buy Nissens radiator, there will be new ones supplied with the radiator.

thanks for the info. i purchased a radiator through genesisautoparts.com and it didn't come with the clips but from what i've read screw hose clamps are a solid substitute. i'll try the local auto stores just in case.

I would re-use the clips and then put a zip tie over it like abscate has noted. My friend had a clip come off while he was driving so I have all 4 of my lines zip tied over the clips.

ah ok i got it. the only reason i ask about replacement or substitute clips is just in case any of them happen to break, this issue doesn't seem to be too common but better to be safe than sorry.

- Re-use the metal clip, no need to replace it but here are the tricks:

1. THICK side of the metal clip faces the radiator, THIN side faces the engine!
2. Place a screw-type clamp over the metal clamp and snug it down. For photo, see the pic posted by xHeart:

The THICK and THIN side of the metal clip: I learned it the hard way. Back in 2008, the indy replaced the rear main seal for me as I don't have a lift.

He placed the metal clip backward: THIN side toward the radiator!

A few months alter, during a winter storm, icy road, I lost most of ATF on the highway, but luckily crawled to local Target store to buy some Dexron-III.

Next morning, poured ATF in, as soon as engine started, it poured out the upper cooler connection at the radiator.
Went to Volvo dealer to buy the metal clip, thinking it was the culprit. A master mechanic happened to be at the parts counter and told me I don't need new clip, all I need is the PROPER orientation: THICK side ---> radiator. And a place a clamp over it.
He said at the dealership, they see this all the time, private indy shop does the ATF flush but put the clip backward ---> ATF leaking. So at dealership, they routine place clamp over the clip as a standard procedure.

Another note: when you remove the clip using snap-ring pliers, you can spread it too much that during installation, it does not "bite" properly, thus the screw-type clamp is the ticket!

A zip tie on top of the old clamp works great, is super cheap and easy, and I have never heard of a single one failing.
