1998 C70 T5 - Abhorrent fuel consumption/Could it be timing?

Post by andreborges »

Hello, fellow MVS members and contributors,

My dear C70 has been putting constant town 20-19 litres/100 km (12 mpg) on the clock for quite a while now, so, I'm in need of you guys' expertise...

These days I decided to check the spark plugs (for the first time, since replacing with proper NGK Coppers), and re-gapped 'em to 0.28'', having reduced 1l/100km of the final count. There was a small amount of oil in the wells and in the screw, which I wiped, and there did not seem to be any white stains in the plugs heads. Then, upon checking my OBDII app, there seems to show a 5.0/4.5/6.0 constant "Timing Advance" data, and I cannot figure out why (you may have noticed I never performed a TB replacement in this car, for the last owner has).

For information purposes, this is the list of replacements I've performed: replaced Fuel Pressure Regulator (not Bosch, but 3.0 bar, factory spec unit), replaced Throttle Position Sensor, replaced Idle Air Control valve, replaced fuel pump and filter, replaced intake and intercooler hoses and cleaned intake housing, replaced rotor, distributor, ignition cables and spark plugs, replaced Mass Airflow Sensor and replaced the whole PCV system (cleaning PTC nipple included). Also gave a full 2 turns tightening to my wastegate actuator (which improved strongly the cars' response under throttle), though it does not seem to have altered the petrol mileage of the vehicle. Also replaced the struts/shocks and derived items, performing full alignment and balancing afterwards.

Could you guys help me with this annoying problem that has been emptying my student's pockets since I've bought the ole girl? :(

If you do not use OEM parts to do your tune up you are asking for issues with mpg economy.

- Volvo plugs.
- Volvo or Bougiecord wires
- Bosch Cap
- Bosch Rotor
- Bosch MAF
- Bosch o2 sensor
- 91+ Octane fuel
- Check timing.

Dear rspi, all parts I used were OEM (except where noted, i.e., the FPR). Also, I use Podium fuel, 102 RON, by Petrobras. The o2 was the one I did not change.

Could timing be affecting my fuel economy?

Those are some low numbers. Check to see if your brakes are dragging or the thermostat is stuck closed

Hello, mecheng. Thanks for the answer. I'll perform the brake test right away, but I do not know how to figure the thermostat (for which I have bought a spare, but never used).

You can start by replacing the NGK plugs. As mentioned, if the thermostat is bad, the car will run rich and use to much gas. Does the temp needle go to 3 O'clock quickly and stay there?

Thanks for the reply, rspi. The temp gauge does exactly that, and it stays right in the middle, though the electric fan does seem to be cycling normally... Does that mean it has been functioning correctly or it is fouled?

Sounds good.

Read the info in the link and see if anything there helps you.

Is the air filter element clean or dirty and due for replacing?
A faulty temperature sensor can affect the fuel mixture similarly to how the thermostat can.

That's spot on the fuel consumption I had before I replaced the front oxygen sensor. I'm so happy I have to go twice less often to the gas station as of now :)

Here's the part I used (not the same number for your car), because many out there are of poor quality and I can't trust them. It's an NTK (or NGK) sensor
