2002 S60 AWD Engines swappable/coolant leak

Post by butthole »

Hi everybody!

I've got a pretty major coolant leak on my car (atleast 5L+ in the past 2 weeks) which I havn't got around to having it properly diagnosed but I was thinking I may just swap the engine as it is getting old anyway (215km)

I've got a 2000 v70 2.4T (I'm assuming it's a B5244T) would this be a straight swap? Original is a B5244T3 with compression ratio 9. 0: 1

On the times i've had to refill the coolant while hot it bubbles over and it has allowed me to see this residue (also you can see junk in the liquid itself)

This isn't oil that has made it's way into the coolant system is it?

No, 2002 has dual CVVT and the 2000 is exhaust only CVVT.

Don't know about North America but my now sold 2002 S60AWD had a B5244T3 engine fitted. That makes it a single VVT. I replaced the cam belt myself. FCP Euro only lists the B5244T3 as the only engine for that vehicle.

The 2002 turbo is a weird year with a new thermostat and Bosch throttle just like the 2002 XC70 however AWD system gets Haldex in the S60; a year earlier than the XCs.

215tkm on a well maintained Volvo engine is barely broken in, is there coolant in the engine oil pointing towards a possibly bad head gasket? If not, check your transmission oil, you could have a bad radiator allowing bleed over between coolant & ATF, also if you can't find any leak in the engine bay, check for moisture in the footwells, your heater core o-rings should be coming due if you haven't done them yet, not sure which side the leak would be on a right hand drive.

Good luck, Ben

Two common issues are the coolant reservoir gets cracked and leaks/bubbles, and the transmission coolant line brakes inside the radiator allowing transmission fluid to mix with engine coolant.

Of course, the head gasket could also blow if the car overheated - such as due to a stuck thermostat.

Thanks. Ben, am I able to check the oils for contamination via the dipsticks?

Yes, it would look somewhat milky. I can't really tell much from your picture in terms of oil, but the dried overflow looks actually rusty to me, though it's an aluminum motor, on the right side of the motor, so if you stand in front of the car behind the motor towards the firewall, there is some steel coolant piping with a drain cock for the coolant that's in the engine, it's factory zinc plated, but on the original motor of my '01 with then 270tkm it was pretty rusty on the outside, if for a longer time there has been just water in your motor it could be a reason for the rust in your coolant & the piping could possibly be rusty to the point of leakage.

Oh poo it gave a cylinder 5 misfire code today (not sure if relevant).

There was a small crack on the coolant reservoir which I sealed with JB weld (that stuff is great) and it seemed to fix it for about 24hrs but I noticed it usually gives the "Coolant low: Stop engine" warning after more than 3500rpm

Clear it, and see if it reoccurs. In the meantime, move coil pack 5 to the 4 position and see if the code changes.
