1987 240 Wagon - Burnt wire in area behind motor.

Post by 240Wagonista »

Hello Everyone,

I'd appreciate some advice on a burnt wire I noticed today.

(I was trying to locate an "under the hood" diagram so that I could use proper terminology without any success so if you know of where I might find one, please do let me know!)

In the meantime, if anyone can tell me what this burnt wire appears to be, or what it is called, I'd appreciate it!

Many thanks,

Laura

This is the area that is in question. Wire appears burnt and is split in two.

It appears to be a Ground Wire; its bolted into metal firewall, yes?

It does not come with insulation.

I would try to reconnect the ends.

Thank you for the reply. This helped me do a better search on the web. I found an forum that discussed this very issue:
http://www.forums.turbobricks.com/showt ... p?t=183848

If I am reading this correctly, it would appear that the car CAN run without this, but it is better to fix sooner than later. Interestingly, there was another ground wire to the left of this wire unattached to the firewall.

At least now I can go to my mechanic sounding knowledgeable. Thanks!

Generally, its a good idea to secure grounding wires.

I am not familiar with what that braided ground wire is for, and there are no 1987s where I live.

See what a mechanic would charge....you could make a make-shift ground with a piece of 12-gauge wire and two alligator clips attached to that wire
