96 850 non turbo/ oil leak by cps

Post by rogreact »

I have a oil leak near the cps but I cannot tell exactly. Its pretty bad. My question is does the cps seal go bad? The car runs fine. I put my hand under the engine mount and I can feel air and I can see oil spraying out. It will spray right on my hand. The seal is 3.50 but the garage will want to replace timing belt water pump and all that stuff. Around 700.00 us.

thanks for any advice

What is a CPS?

If you are talking about a cam seal, and it is pushed out, you may be able to push it back in. However, a clogged PCV will push the seals out so you should make sure it is in good shape.

I usually just replace it. I usually needs to be done every 10 years or so. If you try to take it apart and service it, you will likely break pieces of it and have to order parts anyway.

If you have cam seals leaking, and they are leaking at the rear, all you have to do is pull the 2 bolts on the cam sensor, remove the 10mm bolt on the rotator, pull the seal out and press another one in. I usually use OEM seals, others may fail sooner than later, especially if you have head pressure due to a bad PCV system.

CPS = Cam Position Sensor.

Any time you push the cam seal back in, or install a new one, you will want to wipe off the excess oil well. Otherwise it will come right back out very easily.

Thanks for all the great info. I threw the flame trap away. It was completely blocked. I pushed the cam seal back in. Everything was pretty simple once you have the information. I need to replace the oil cap seal which I did not know went bad. One more question... Are the any more choke points on the pcv system I should look at. I still have smoke from the dipstick but not under any pressure. So do I still have some problem?

A big, remaining choke point on the PCV is the bottom drain of the oil trap, back into the block. I can't tell from you posts, did you service the PCV or just deal with the flame trap? PCV likely needs full service.

I just pulled the flame trap out and cleaned the part that holds the flame trap.That hose you refer to. Is it easy enough to get to

It's going to need PCV service, it is a hassle to do it right but there are no shortcuts (the intake manifold has to come off, etc.). It is not hard, but it takes a long time the first time you do it just because a lot of parts come off, then go back on.
