Okay , so , has this ever happened to anyone else ?
I took my volvo in due to a major oil leak , it turned out that cam seals blew out , due to a clogged oil trap.
I had the cam seals replaced , crank seals , timing belt and every seal related to the oil trap etc.
When I picked my car up from the shop , I had a hard time starting it , it finally started and I drove it home ( less than 5 miles ) when I got home I noticed the engine was louder than ever , it sounded as though something was rubbing on a cover or a pulley was grinding on something.
I shut it off , waited a 1/2 hour and went back outside and tried to start my car , it took forever to get it started it , it would thunk and keep turning after I let off the key and then finally it started and it sounded like a belt was squealing like crazy and the same pulley was rubbing even worse and now it sounded as though I had a diesel and a blower hooked up with that high pitched jet whistle they make.
I drove it right back to the shop and dropped it off.
Today they called , they said that my starter was hanging up and that was causing the noise and that the cam position sensor was bad and that's why it wouldn't start.
now , here my real problem with this: I have had the car 15 months , it has never even hickuped on a start , it has always started on the first turn of the key with less than a second before its running great , it was running perfectly except for the oil leak when i took it to the shop...I have never had any indication of a bad starter or sensor.
has this ever happend to anyone else ????

The timing is suspicious but I suppose that it isn't out of the question that they just went bad. As a part of removing and replacing the cam seals the cam position sensor would have necessarily been removed and replaced with the original and, if the rear main seal was really replaced, the starter would have been removed and also replaced with the original.
I have had parts go bad after I have been working in their immediate area but it certainly isn't "normal". Having two such items go bad in that circumstance, at the same time, pushes the limits on bad luck.
It is possible that what really happened is that the starter didn't get bolted back up all the way and that the trigger window on the cam sensor got installed wrong and the parts themselves never were bad but it is one of those things that you will never know for sure on since you didn't do the repair.

I was just wondering if this kind of thing happens to others....seems things break while they are sitting at the repair shop , and you end up with double the bill you expected.
Even more suspicious is , I picked my car up last night again , and it started quickly , I drove it home , turned it off and tried to restart it after a few minutes and it hiccuped again and turned on the check engine light , I did a scan and it showed that the cam sensor was the culprit.
after clearing the code it started fine and started fine this morning as well.
we'll see when I leave work.

.......Which is beginning to sound more and more like they pinched or stressed a wire in the loom during their work.

Which end of the engine was the noise coming from before, the belt end or the bellhousing end?

im not 100% sure where it was coming from to be honest , it was loud enough you could hear it a block away with your windows up following me to the shop.
the big problem now is:
When I start the car from time to time , it will not start on the first try , it tries , it stalls or thunks and stalls and it takes 3 - 7 tries to start it , which it turns the check engine light on giving me a P0340 , this was only happening when it was warmed up , this morning with it 50* outside it did it on the first start of the morning and then at the gas station on the way to the shop and again at the shop , where it is now being looked at again.
They hired a volvo trained mechanic from one of the dealerships near by , but alas it seems they have done something wrong

If it were mine, I would pull the CPS and check the metal back plate that bolts to the cam. could it have been improperly installed and the mounting tabs bent, or otherwise damaged? Even if it was reinstalled properly, the back plate, or the sensor may be out of whack. Checking it is free at least.
When I had the trans replaced in my XC90, it took three tries to get it home, first time, trans dipstick tube blew out, sorry for them, that ate up all their profit. Then as I followed my wife home from the shop, I watched in horror as a HUGE cloud of white smoke came billowing out from under the car. The coolant hose on the back of the motor had been connected, but the clamp had not been tightened! Little things happen all the time. Even by professionals.
