1997 850R - is this MAF defective?

1997 850R - is this MAF defective?

Just picked up my '97 850R on Friday and averaged about 15 mpg on the way home from just north of Albany to just south of Boston, so we're obviously looking into all the sensors. Took the MAF out this afternoon to clean it and I noticed that the rubber/silicone seal on the side doesn't cover the whole opening. Is that a problem?
