Volvo Repair Database S70 moonroof doesn't close tight

Post by Lynn »

My 1998 S70's moonroof doesn't close tightly unless I step out and give it a punch. I've cleaned the track area but there really wasn't anything there. Any ideas? Can/should the rubber be lubricated in any way? It looks like it has some mold or pollen or something (green) on it. This is western Washington. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem on mine. I tried silicon lubricant but it didn't work. It looks like the rubber is too tight. I should say that I changed it(weather strip) because the frame began to rust.

This was before or after you changed it? If it was after, please let me know if you figure out how to resolve it and I'll do the same.

The thing is I've put some polyurethane between the frame and the rubber because the design of this roof is very bad and will eventually rust. The water gets between the window and the frame and stays there. Most of the time, you won't see it until you get a water drop on your head and it's too late. Cancer is in your roof and 900$ out of your pocket.
I don't have the problem when I use it in sliding mode.So I can live with it.

It is very strange that this is the only part of my car that rusted. I became aware of the issue when I got a drop of water on my head...then one day, the whole head liner was soaking wet. I had tried to repair it in numerous ways, but it didn't work. Finally I took the weather stripping off and did the repair on my rusted, leaking sunroof last week. Here is a post about it:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=52360

Fortunately for me, I've never had a problem with it not closing. But in taking the sunroof out and putting it back in, I've found how the up and down of the sunroof can be adjusted. It could be that yours needs just that. It isn't that difficult. Here is Bay13's write up on where the screws are, etc.: http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/sunroof.php

Loosen the 2 front screws mentioned above just enough to where you can move the sunroof glass, manuever it to just the way you want it, then tighten the screws up again. See if your motor will lower the glass where you set it. If not, the rest are just small adjustments.

I actually checked swedespeed also and didn't get results with a search. Figured I was doing it wrong. Just tried again. (If in doubt, READ WHAT IT SAYS!) Search isn't working; says try again later ...dah :?

I too was mucking with my moonroof lately. I tried to fix the two ends of the trim buckling, but when I got into it I saw the rust behind the trim strip goes all the way around the glass! Ugh.

I ended up removing about half the trim, drying the rust, removing what rust I could, then gluing back the trim with a sealant called "Liquid Nails." The result was less than spectacular, primarily because the sealant is very thick.

Here's some pics:

Hey MIJ,

Does the plastic trim you're talking about look like a elbow?

Thanks Matthew for my avatar, I tried to reduce it myself and it didn't work.
