2002 S60 Bad Vibration At Idle

Post by velorider »

Sadly this might be one of my last posts. My wife car is no longer a 2002 S60 but a 2013 328i. However, I really like the Volvo, perhaps its the countless hours repairing/maintaining it. At 130K miles it still almost drives like new. The front suspension system has been 100% replaced, 50% of the rear suspension, plus standard repair/maintenance. So instead of just selling it, I'm going to drive it until I'm over it.

This leads to the latest issue to fix, bad vibration at idle. I've replaced over the last 30K miles all the mounts with IPD poly mounts, expect for the left passenger side. I've been sitting on the IPD bushing inserts since a flash sale a few month ago, so I finally decided to install them. Now the car has great road feedback and very responsive. However, since installing the bushing inserts the idle vibration has gotten out of control. More so then anyone would tolerate.

I spent hours searching and have narrowed it down to either the hydraulic mounts or low rpm engine misfire. There is no CEL, so right now I'm leaning toward the hydraulic mounts. I read somewhere if the wire band is loose the mounts a toast.

I ordered a pair and plan to replace them. Hoping the vibration will return to a acceptable level.

Mean while I have time to ponder what else it could be or confirmation it's most likely the mounts. I hear the mounts are a real PITA so I'll be bummed if replacing them does nothing.

So I put this issue out to MVS readers. Any thoughts as to the source of crazy idle vibration. I know the poly's will make vibration at idle worse, but this is ridiculous.

Since this might be my last post I plan to do a pictorial instruction of the process. I've seen 850 but not s60 so one last contribution.

Check your Electronic Throttle Module aka Throttle Body. A VIDA scan will reveal whether it is failing and/or dirty. That is where I would start. I believe your model still uses the Magnetti Marelli unit - do a search and confirm. If so it is likely the culprit. If so you can do a Contactless rebuild, if it is the Bosch unit try cleaning it. Either way you can clean it, but if it is a MM type it is most likely failing - again the appropriate VIDA scan will tell you.

It's the turbo so shouldn't be etm issue. I cleaned the throttle body about 15k ago when I did the oil trap.

I don't have Vida, so maybe I'm I need to get that.
Thanks john
