2007 S40 Head Gasket
I'm a pretty skilled shadetree mechanic. But this is my only vehicle. Head gasket blew and I need to replace. Local shop quoted me $3500! Is this a job I can tackle on my own? The VVT scares me

It really depends on your skills. I don't know what you can do lol.. but these engines have been around a while, and the information you need is all over the Internet.. So that's on your side. I'm by no means a mechanic, but I did the head gasket on a 12v v6 audi motor with literally just Internet tutorials and it wasn't too bad. Got another 50k and 6 years and sold it still running strong. But the real issue is if you don't have another car, do you need it to be repaired immediately? I did a lot more than just the hg because I was in there anyways and parts are cheap, but it took me about 2 weeks with numerous trips to the dealer and waiting for online orders. But I had another car too. I know it's not the same motor, but it's an experience.

The first thing you need to get it BOTH the Haynes manual and the free VIDA VMware image and read them closely. Those will give you an idea of the scale of the project. It is doable, but Ou2mame had a good point about time and access to tools.
