Hello,
I have only been a Volvo owner for the past year, and I think these cars are amazingly well built. That said, I recently did a rear brake job on my 1990 240DL Wagon, which seems to have turned out well, after going for a spin and testing it out. The problem however has to do with the "Brake Light Switch." When I first start up the car everything is great, but I was to learn from my wife standing to the rear of the car off to the left, that once I applied the brakes, the brake lights just stay on. Okay, so the Haynes Volvo 240 Series 1976 thru 1993 Manual, called for a switch adjustment on page 9-15.
It says that, a 5/32-inch (4.0mm) switch setting is supposed to be achieved by loosening the screws and then moving the switch bracket, so that the stop lights come on when the pedal movement is between about 5/16 and 9/16 of an inch. This doesn't seem to really apply here. My switch doesn't look like the one in the book, so that in itself is confusing.
Additionally, I discovered, that no matter where I move the protruding finger of the switch, which if I am correct, should turn off the brake lights, once the pedal returns to its resting position of not being pressed, it still never turns them off. Whether the switch finger is fully extended, anywhere in-between, or fully pressed back in, the brake lights are always on.
Not being Volvo savvy yet, but having worked on many makes and models of American, German and British cars to the level of complete rebuilds as a hobby, and out of necessity as well, since the age of 14, my thoughts gravitate toward switch failure. Still why would the act of a brake job, that helped to bring the pedal back up, as all pads, and discs are new, cause switch failure like that?
Finally, whenever I turn off the car, the brake lights reset, in that they don't go back to permanently on again, until I initially apply them for the first time after restarting the engine.
If anyone has any thoughts on this matter, I would surely appreciate hearing them. Thank you for your time and thought.
