1994 940 How to replace water pump
Looking for instructions on how to replace water pump for 1994 940 (non turbo). Keep searching the forum but don't seem to be able to find anything specifically for my car.

Correct on 940, but the hub should be unbolted before belts are taken off.correllkp wrote:why does the fan/clutch have to be removed?....not necessary for the 940?
240/740s had mechanical fans, not electric like 940s.

It's easier to loosen the water pump pulley bolts while the belts are still in place. Once the bolts are broken loose they will be easier to remove later.

Ok. Put in new water pump with new gasket, tophat seal and rubber washer on red pipe. Still leaks (drops) from top hat area even though I used a jack and 2x4 to help compress the seal. I've tried this a couple of times and same thing. It doesn't seem like this should be that difficult. Is it possible, or is it known for block to develop any pinhole leaks in the top hat area?

On many parts removed and replaced, there is a sequence of how to do it.correllkp wrote:...pinhole leaks in the top hat area?
But, generally speaking, one does not torque down bolts until all are inserted, and turned a few times..
It's been several years since I installed a Volvo water pump, but iirc, it must swing upwards, and then bolts are torqued down while pump is held in position. I use di-electric grease and place on all rubber parts, and sometimes, use it for a gasket sealer.
Hence, the pivot-bolt needs to be snug along with its "opposite" bolt when being held in position.

Thanks for the note. Another suggestion was to be sure the top hat seal was OEM. Not sure if it was or not: but, in looking to buy one from TASCA I see that TASCA parts diagram shows a thermostat sitting in the top port of the water pump (where the top hat seal is located). There was no thermostat when I removed the pump so not sure what this diagram refers to. Should there have been one?

Use Volvo Parts Lisle - much better diagrams, same or lower prices, and they are responsive (unlike Tasca). Use FCP to look up the part, pull the part number, and drop it into Volvo Lisle's search. It is part #8 here (pictured below). I can't get the diagram for a non turbo, but the water pumps are the same.
