Replace 960 water pump without removing the timing belt

Post by tjts1 »

I replaced my leaking water pump today without removing the timing belt or serpentine belt. I had to remove and reset the timing belt tensioner and tensioner pulley. I used a bungee to keep tension on the belt and a some whiteout to mark the belt and pulleys. Its not exactly by the book but it saved a lot of time and effort. The timing belt and associated pulleys are only 10k miles old. The water pump was the factory original with 170k miles.

The pics are in reverse order.
Ambitious but rubbish

YMMV, but I prefer to replace both at the same time on redblock engines.
