Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 s80 sputter at stop P0475 code

Post by brayski »

My 2002 s80 sputters when I'm stopped! I have a engine one code of P0475. I just had the PVC box replaced and vacuum hoses and pressure control fixed because of previous code that read P0172 P0171.. Fuel to Rich in bank 1and bank 2. Those codes are now gone! But this sputtering problem has just begun! I filled up my tank with mid graded gas {unsure of what type of gas previous owner used... Just bought the car used}. It drove a okay.. Went to get new tires and the mechanic putting on the tires and doing the inspection told me I had a code P0475 and that my check engine light was on! I was surprised because I had just left my trusted mechanic of 20+ years. I will take it back to him... Like I say I trust him, but I want some info on what it could possibly be and how much it might cost. At first I thought it might be the gas... Not sure though.. Any advice questions or suggestions

I found no p0475 code in alldata for a 2002 s80 but a goole search found this

Generic OBD Error Code Details for P0475
Exhaust Pressure Control Valve
What does this mean?
OBD Code P0475refers to
Exhaust Back Pressure Regulator - Is a variable position valve that controls exhaust back pressure during cold ambient temperatures to increase cab heat and decrease the amount of time needed to defrost the windshield. The PCM uses the measured exhaust back pressure, (ambient) intake air temperature, engine oil temperature and engine load to determine the desired exhaust back pressure. Valve position is controlled by switching the output signal circuit to 12 volts inside the PCM. On/off time is modulated from 0 to 99 % dependent upon the exhaust back pressure desired. Upon each initial engine start-up, the PCM exercises the exhaust back pressure valve by commanding it to cycle on and off once. If upon start-up the temperature of intake air sensed by the IAT sensor is < 37°F (5°C) and the oil temperature sensed by the EOT sensor is between 32°-140°F (0-60°C) it will continue to keep the back pressure valve partially closed. As the oil temperature rises during engine operation, the PCM will control the valve in response to the rising oil temperature.
Symptoms
Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0475
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
Causes
Possible causes of OBD code P0475
- Exhaust Back Pressure Valve The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: An open or shorted to ground control circuit can be detected by an on demand output circuit check performed during the engine off test. Problems with either the Exhaust Back Pressure Device or the tube between the exhaust manifold and the EBP sensor can be detected during the exhaust back pressure step test, in which the PCM commands and then measures a specific preprogrammed pressure and then measures time for pressure decay during the engine running test. If the PCM detects an EBP, EOT or IAT sensor fault it will disable the exhaust back pressure regulator.
Possible Solutions
Check the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) butterfly valve is opening and closing freely and not sticking. If it seems to move freely you can then check the connector and circuit for the EBPV solenoid.

Having the worst luck with my fuel system and my mass air flow meter. I am wondering what this new code is that just popped up yesterday when I went to the Volvo dealership. When I first bought the car used I had the following codes p0171 p0172 p0175. After getting those codes I got some repairs done (pcv box & hoses) and then I got a new code which was p0497. Once I fixed the problems associated with that code (purge value or was it pressure value?? Idr) my car started running better and I felt a little more secure although, I still had the check engine light to come on. So I finally went to the stealership and they tell me there's yet another code which is ECM 130a. their machine is Volvo specific so I could assume that their diagnostic is correct and what it indicates is what they are going to attempt to fix. But how do i know if the whole system need overhaul or just a minor tweek somewhere (i.e vac line). when i looked at the price and labor I'm left flabbergasted! I would hate to spend all that money and time ($541.00S and 67 miles) and it only needed cleaning. So now I am looking into making the repairs myself. Any suggestions one might have please please please feel free to forward them on to me. I do understand the concept of how to remove the mass air meter and clean it and I have seen tons of YouTube videos on it. My question is this; are there any other things that I should check and is there anything else that will trip this code. I have a slight exhaust smell in the cabin!
