So, the lower boot when bad on the left CV axle. When the mechanic went to pull the axle out of the transmission it wouldn't come out. He gave up because he didn't want to crack the transmission and have to buy me a new one. So, I took it to a different shop and they couldn't get it out either, although they said that I would have to pay for the transmission if they broke it. Anyone have a good idea of how to fix this? Oh, I should add that there is a possibility that a few of these had over sized clips that can cause this problem.
Here are the three ideas that I have at the moment. 1) Get a Volvo axle and cobble it up to the part that is stuck in the transmission. We tried that with the part I had bought but the bearings were not the right size. 2) Pull the transmission and see if a machine shop has a way to pull it out without cracking the transmission. 3) Pull the transmission and disassemble it to get the axle unstuck from the inside.

remove the axle so only the inner cup remains in the trans.
Use a vice grip puller and slide hammer.
Sometimes they need more help and we drill or plasma cut a hole through the inner axle cup. We then insert a rod and connect the slide hammer to that.
If you only have a mig welder handy - most shops do. Then tack a 1/2 in plate/bar across the opening of the cv cup and use the slide hammer to attach to it and slide hammer it out.
Try and push in the axle and turn it between tries. Jimmy57 has some posts that will describe why that is helpful .

Cutting a hole sounds like it has potential. I'm not positive what all has been tried, but the first guy tried for about 6 hours and the second for 2. There have been chisels, prybars, pneumatic wedge thing, a large slide hammer and who knows what else tried. There was mention of getting two prybars in there and pushing with both feet and nothing happening.JDS60R wrote:remove the axle so only the inner cup remains in the trans.

I saw a what was probably around a 3/4" chisel on the shop floor by the car and they had what looked like a skinny pneumatic ball joint separator that they tried too.vtl wrote:Pushing with foot is not too efficient. Maybe they need a bigger chisel? My rusted axle popped out after some efforts.

I had a whale of time getting LH side half shaft out of transmission too. What worked was 2 - 3 inch wide cold chisel with broad flat blade hammered with 3lb hammer. Hammer, wedge, rotate 90deg and repeat. You can do it.
When mine came out, there was light rusting at the spline and retainer ring.

This is more than I want to take on. I know how to do the work, but it's easier to make the money to pay someone else. I talked to a transmission shop in town and they are going to do the job. They guy is taking it as a personal challenge. He thinks he can do it in 3 hours and will cap the labor charge at $250 even if he has to take out the transmission to get the axle out. I can't complain about that. I'll let everyone know what ends up happening and what the problem was.

Well, shop number 3 got it out without too much problem, I guess it pays to go to a transmission shop for drive train stuff. The problem was rust on the splines.
