Irregular front tire wear

Post by Crbzk »

I checked out a family members car the other day to change the rotors and brake pads. Once I took the wheel off I was harshly surprised by metal wire sticking out on the inside of both front tires due to uneven wear. I'm not sure where the problem lies here, either suspension or alignment?
If anyone had any pointers that'd be great.

-Thanks in advance

First thing I would check is the control arms. You would see this kind of wear if the ball joint (s) are worn.

2000 Volvo S70 GLT To my knowledge the tires are actually 'new' for the most part

When I check the car out again I take a better look. Bad ball joints can be spotted by trying the push the raised tire from the top and bottom to see if there is any wiggle room, correct?

It depends on how bad it's worn.
Pretty bad worn out control arm ball joint can have a wiggle to 9 & 3 o'clock as well, even if that positions are for examining tie rods condition.

It's probably bad alignment due to worn out suspension. Ball joints( which means lower control arms on these cars) and both inner and outer tie rod ends are all suspect
