Front Strut Movement

When I look at the top side of the front struts under the bonnet, and jack the car up, when the wheels come off the ground, I see 1/4" movement on the nut and washer that makes me wonder what's going on.

I saw this last week and bought new reinforced spring mounts and top bearings thinking all would be snug after fitting but it aint so

Also, looking at diagrams to check parts order, I see that the washer that goes after the bump stop looks like a plain washer with a rolled edge. Mine have a Bakalite like insert tha looks like it had a flange on it that has busted away. Anyone have a clue what's going on with this. IPD boys didn't know nuffin about such an insert.

I haven't road tested yet to check that the front end clunk has gone as I have the dash out fixing that f**king squeek. Here's some snaps of my progress. The grey epoxy will be spived up a bit just to check for adhesion before I throw it back in the car and prey the racket's gone !! If there's any comments re its potential durability, I'd appreciate them very much.

Oh wowsa! I though from the pics you were doing an evaporator replacement. I have no idea of the epoxy will hold but it's worth a try. Thanks MiJ. My mystery part in Bakalite is #6 which when referenced on their cut sheets, doesn't show as available !! So, I suppose we just don't need it.

Hopefully, as my AC runs pretty damm cold, my evap unit is good. Are there any signs to look for indicating its imminent dumping ??

Just loss of gas so it cuts off and on- you fill it up and in no time it does that again...that's the way the 850's were...some improvement on the later models starting in '98. what probably actually helped the most is the addition of the cabin filter (as long as folks knew about it and changed it routinely). Earliest FWD models didn't have them and all the crud that got through the vents accumulated on the evaporator and destroyed it- especially moisture.

Road tested and shocks now don't clunk. Very happy with that, just revealed how bad the shocks are !! Oh well, now I know I can get new shocks done in a relaxed day.

And the DASH SQUEAKS ARE GONE GONE GONE.................................. Fantastic sounds like a car at last and not some cheap carnival ride.

It's usually just dirt and debris buildup in the case that kill it from the outside. Having a vacuum pulled and held on the system every couple of years will boil out moisture and help keep acidic traces from eating it from the inside out.

When I had my dash out for the dreaded tab repairs, I pulled the blower motor and blower resistor and it exposed enough of the evap core for me to see some debris that had collected at the bottom edge. Yes, even with a cabin filter it gets in there over the years somehow. Then I sprayed a core cleaner (from Home Depot) all over the core and left it with a pan under the car for it to drain into for about an hour or two. I sprayed about two full spray bottles of water at it until I was convinced it was flushed, dabbed the excess water out with a towel and left it open for a few more days while I worked on the dash and other modifications I was doing.

I am very glad I checked this while in there, I think it probably gave that core a few more years. Plus, combined with my replacing all the dash vent foam seals made my A/C smell minty fresh. But it wouldn't be that much harder to pull those two (Blower Resistor & Blower) out with the dash in. Next time you need to pull the right knee panel, just pull the glove box too, and take a look. I bet there is some organic material in there that doesn't belong along with the normal greasy funk that always seems to be stuck to the fins after years of service.
