I spent all the 4th replacing the Oil Trap / PCV system on my 2001 V70 T5. If you have to do the same ask me first, I will give you the run down on what you might expect to see on 2.3 turbo motor. I also replaced the Turbo oil line seal and gasket. I also replaced the oil line cooler seals. All in all it went well. Remember that you have to take off the intake manifold, fuel rail injection system, all plastic covers off the top of the motor plus the turbo air intake tube and filter air intake etc. Pull off the power steering pump, and the alternator / belt. Those are all the big items on the list. The hardest thing to get at was the nut screwed into the underside of the manifold which included pressure rings. Once on the underside replacing the oil trap was easy.
Good Luck
are you changing out the Oil Trap on a 01 V70 T5

Postivie crank case pressure from a clogged oil trap and realted hoses. You'll see smoke from your oil dip stick as well as possible blow-by from the gasket on your oil fill cap if this is an issue (tell tale sign is oil under your spark plug cover). Excessive pressure will eventually blow out your rear main engine seal which means big big bucks to replace, not to mention the ugly oil leak on the ground and your garage.

Everything "Made in Japan" stated is correct in regards to the Oil Trap / PCV system on a Volvo. Let me add that in fact if you are luckey enough to discover the problem before it blows out your main seals, you will see oil blow by around the oil filler cap. You might start seeing oil leaking from the turbo seals where the oil line meets the block coming from the turbo, "that is if you have a turbo to worry about."
In question as to why I had to remove the alternator power steering pump etc. Under the intake manifold are some lines that are attached via a banjo nut with two copper pressure washers. They are located just right of the power steering pump. I managed to get this nut off without having to take those components off. However, do to the angle at which it has to be at in order to screw back it with the lines attached etc, I tried about a hundred times to get it back on to no avail. The only way to get your hand in there to postion the nut at the correct angle I had to take those accessories off to get the job done correctly.

Oh yeah, my car has 85,000 miles on it. Also, I think the the setup for a 98 V70 and a 2001 are not the same. Unless, If you don't see oil dripping or blow by oil on your valve covers or underneat it. Or excessive heat and smoke coming from your dipstick tube, you should be fine and there would be no need to change those items.

I called FCPGroton before I did my pcv service and they told me that even on the newer cars ('01's included), that they have an oil trap/separator and they should all be changed out by about 100K miles at most to keep oil seals from blowing. I think that is pretty reasonable, if you ask me.
