Trunk Lock Acting Up

The lock on my tailgate decided to stop working a couple weeks ago. I have a feeling that it has to do with the wiring that has frayed or something, because when the tailgate is opened, the lock works fine. But when I close it and try to lock/unlock the car or the trunk, it doesn't do anything.
Is this a common problem? And if it is wiring, does anyone know where I can look without tearing up a bunch of wiring looms? I had enough fun with that when I did it on the front of my car...

PS, does anyone know if the R lower bumper grilles (next to the fog lights) will fit the non-R bumper? I'm considering getting them because I like the look a lot more than the stock louvered grilles, but I don't want to buy them if they won't fit.

Yes it is a common problem. Happens on sedans as well. I am working on this just now, but in my case I think the motor is actually shot for the power lock. On the wagon look at the wire harness that is attached to the LH tail-gate hinge.

I just pulled apart some panels and a bit of insulation, can't find any breaks yet. After 20 minutes, I'm done with that for the day. It's just too hot! And it's 7:30 in the evening!
Funny thing though is that when I locked the car just now (wires are all opened right now) the lock worked. Definitely a kinked wire somewhere!

Check at the hinge itself nearest the body on LHS. There should be a plastic cover/sleeve over the wires.

Yeah, that's where I had looked initially. I removed some interior panels (around the support shock) to see if the wires were bending anywhere and causing tears in the wires. There are two spots that I know I'd like to look at.

When those wires short out they will take out your starter circuit too.

You mean this is a common problem on the 1998 v70?
What actually happens, the wires break or something else?
