catalytic converter for '98 V70 AWD

Post by zhenya »

The OEM cat in my car is finally giving up after some 18 years by rattling its insides to bits. My indy mechanic seems to think that the OEM one is no longer available and didn't have any great suggestions for a replacement. Some online parts sites are listing the part as still available, for around $1000. Any other good options available that fit well, have a reasonable lifespan, and don't alter the sound all that much since my wife will be primarily driving this car?

It's been a while since I lived in NYS, so I am not up to date on what's legal for emissions work, but here in Toronto I have gone with a weld-in Magnaflow-- about $250 installed. It cured a P0420, and sounds the same as OEM.

I live in NYS and was able to pass emissions with a random Magnaflow welded onto my 99 Altima at a muffler shop. The muffler and cat were $250 installed here. So it can work.

But the thing is, if you start cutting off pieces from the exhaust, you could make things worse. Especially considering the flex-pipe is part of the exhaust manifold.

My flex pipe looks bad and my cat looks bad and sounds bad, too. And I'm starting to get P0133s more often... But my inspection isn't due yet!

I'd say try a muffler shop, and hopefully they can do a good job. But know that you might have a bigger job down there to tackle. Good luck, zhenya.

If you have space for a parts car you can probably buy the car for the cost of a cat and put that it in,

I scored a $100 perfect used cat from the Parts Forum here, and dropped my own cat 3 months later coming back from Ithaca.

Karmic withdrawal.

There is always Ebay but as above, why new? Converters last for the life time unless some road debris will kick on them

Selling a used cat is not legal in NY unfortunately so my mechanic doesn't want to touch that although he'd like to be able to. I'm not looking for another car to park on the street either! Most likely I'll take it to a dedicated muffler shop and see what they have to say. Thanks all!
