98 v70 na spring won't seat properly

1998 V70 NA Starting replacing front struts yesterday and passenger side was a breeze but when I pulled the other the spring seemed slightly bowed.
The shock was completely blown and the bump stop in bad shape saturated with oil. When I seat the spring at the bottom it is fine but at the top the spring seems to have opened up. I put the spring in the groove on the spring seat right up to the stop and it no longer follows the groove all the way around causing the spring to bow. This is the way I have set the springs before with out a problem . Could the spring have been damaged from bottoming out with the bad strut and bump stop ? I could rotate the spring seat but then the end of the spring would be a few inches back from the stop. I was careful not to invert the spring but I will double check . Thank you, frisky

Feeling foolish but somewhat relieved that I DID have the spring up side down . I thought I had been so careful but somehow had inverted it.
Oh well , maybe this will help someone else . Looks good now just need to put it back on . Thanks , Frisky
