intermittent no start v70

My friend has a 98-2000 v70 NA that got an intermittent no start situation. Sometimes it will attempt to start but dies rightaway. After two or three tries it usually fires right
up. Sometimes it starts on the first attempt. The problem occurs with both keys. My suggestion to him was to start with a nice tuneup that is overdue for years but the dealer where he had his AC finally charged after 5 years of wondering why the AC doesn't work properly told him it is the ring or loop that detects the key in the ignition and the no start is caused by the immobilizer. I know how it feels if you forget to unlock an 850 properly: you turn the key and nothing happens. But then my 850ies don't have the chipped keys.

Any input is appreciated, he'd just hate to spend money on parts and still have the same problem.

It could be the immob ring, bad ignition switch, or Stage zero stuff..even the ETC.

The 99 on seem to be a bit more robust on the immob area from anecdata here, and VIDA would nail that

Thanks, this gives me something to tell him. If you list the immob ring and the dealer thinks so too he might be right. But then, just might be.
He just wanted a second opinion and I told him I´d have to ask people who know.
